Play Therapy with Children in Transition: Foster and Adoptive Children

Children in transition are a unique population for Play Therapists. Their ties to what they have known have been severed leading to a sense of loss. They face new unknown challenges leading to anxiety. Many children experience not one but many transitions in the structure of their family. The trauma that has led to the out of home placement and growing up in a dysfunctional family system makes treating this special population complicated. Which do I treat first the trauma or the attachment issues? Play Therapists can help the child navigate between the loss and anxiety to healthier outcomes in attachment, emotions and behaviors.

Learning Objectives

    Participants will:

    1. Understand how to work with the new attachment figures and the child using play therapy.

    2. Be able to identify and respond to transitional related play themes, developmental issues and trauma factors that arise with out of home children during play therapy.

    3. Learn directed play therapy techniques that help children cope, survive and thrive following out of home placement.

    4. Review legal and ethical considerations that impact play therapy as well as how to maintain boundaries in the role of the play therapist throughout the process.
