Legal, Ethical and Cultural Issues in Play Therapy

This workshop will explore steps toward cultural competence in play therapy. Legal and ethical issues will be reviewed with special attention to dilemmas that may arise in work with different cultural groups. A child’s cultural and ethnic background may influence their response to the toys and games and to the play therapist’s demeanor in the playroom. We will discuss our role and response to cultural differences in play, family relationships and beliefs about therapy.

Learning Objectives

    Participants will:

    1. Review legal requirements and legal issues that may arise during the course of play therapy.

    2. Review ethical guidelines for the practice of play therapy with children and their families.

    3. Be familiar with ethical decision-making models that may be most useful in work with children.

    4. Be familiar with steps to developing cultural competency in play therapy.

    5. Explore models of play therapy and their suitability for play therapy with specific cultural groups.

    6. Be able to explore with a child possible expressions of their culture in the play therapy process.
